Hermetic sealing and hygienic cleaning drive Dairy industry R&D at Ilapak

At this year’s Interpack, ILAPAK’s booth will feature a dairy industry zone, where visitors can talk to experts with in-depth sector knowledge and see machines in action on their products.Since the launch of the Delta 6000 at the last Interpack, ILAPAK has been busy evolving and enhancing this MAP flow wrapping platform, and will unveil a dedicated model for the cheese industry at this year’s show, along with an ultra-hygienic USDA-compliant vertical bag maker.

Delta 6000 3SS: one system, two pack styles

ILAPAK is previewing a new version of its Delta 6000 3SS, which gives cheese producers the option to produce two different formats - pillow bags and three side seal bags - on the same machine.

The new flow wrapper incorporates two different longitudinal sealing systems, giving superior presentation versus flow wrappers that use the same sealing element configuration for producing different designs.

“Historically, producers wanting to run off both types of pack had to compromise on pack presentation. The new Delta 6000 3SS has a sealing system dedicated to each pack style, which not only improves pack quality, but has also made the system more reliable, more stable and more efficient,” says ILAPAK product manager Luca Somaini.

It takes just a couple of minutes to switch from one bag style to the other; the fully automatic changeover is easily effected via the touchscreen. The stand-up Doy style pouches produced on the 3SS setting can easily be fitted with reclosable features, opening up new presentation possibilities for cheese portions.

At the show, the system will be running dummy 250g blocks of cheese at speeds of around 100ppm. These will be presented in Doy style packs with a reclosable zipper and modified atmosphere.

Besides offering superior format flexibility, the Delta 6000 3SS offers complete IP65 protection, enabling full wash down capability, even of the sealing elements. Its ultra-hygienic design has been achieved through full stainless steel execution, isolating the electrical cabinet from the main machine frame and smooth, angled surfaces without recesses.

Vegatronic 6000 Sanitary Design: USDA-compliant bag maker

Cheese producers looking for the ultimate in hygienic design will be impressed by the Vegatronic 6000 SD, a new, ultra-hygienic version of ILAPAK’s flagship vertical bag maker.

The system is designed to be compliant with the USDA’s strict sanitation performance standards. To this end, all components have special finishing; there are no holes or recesses where product can accumulate; all film and product contact parts have ‘extreme’ finishing; and guarding is constructed from transparent material that is highly resistant to harsh cleaning detergents. Cleaning is also facilitated by the machine’s open frame design, clean film carriage and a unique mounting of the forming tube on a swivel arm for easy removal.

“It doesn’t get any more hygienic than this machine,” says Andrea Boccolini, ILAPAK VFFS division product manager. “All of these features combined make for a USDA-compliant system that is extremely quick to clean, yielding dramatic reductions in operating costs and increases in OEE (overall equipment efficiency).”

Thanks to its box motion jaw design, the modular machine can pack grated cheese, feta cubes and other cheese products in a variety of bag styles, including pillow, block bottom, Quattro, EasyPack, Flexcan and Doy-style packs at up to 100ppm.

A well designed weigher is key to maximising output whilst ensuring weighments are cleanly separated. ILAPAK’s dedicated Weightronic WA 16/10 cheese industry multihead weigher - also on show at Interpack - is the ideal partner for the Vegatronic 6000 SD. All of the weigher’s product surfaces are teflon coated or low-adhesion to prevent high value, sticky products such as grated parmesan from sticking to buckets.
